WUMB-founded

Jeff Boudreau passed along some information on the playlist nowadays at WUMB:

It seems every month the music director goes “ga-ga” over some AAA pop/ World Cafe type flash-in-the-pan artists. So far in the month of July that distinction appears to be going to Back Yard Tire Fire, while previously that distinction has belonged to Monsters of Folk (and its four individual members), Lee Harvey Osmond (Tom Wilson), Chris Trapper, Kendel Carson w/ Chip Taylor, Jill Sobeill, Matt the Electrician, The Tallest Man in the World, WPA, Feist, Peter Bradley Adams, Raina Rose, Assembly of Dust, Pearl Jam, Jeff Bridges (the movie star), Feist, and Ingrid Michaelson.

Remember, WUMB’s mission statement is “Serving radio listeners, particularly the folk and roots music audience, through WUMB-FM, the university’s public radio station. . . .” How, by overplaying pop, are they accomplishing that? WUMB’s music director came from commercial AAA radio WBOS. Every day “public” WUMB, “Boston’s NPR music station” is sounding more and more like the old WBOS.
