The University Assembly Line

From Jeff Boudreau:

Although not directly related to public radio, these words capture the cultural shift we are seeing. Public (in name only) radio stations such as WGBH and WUMB’s shifting away from folk and blues music in favor of “single format news/talk” and AAA, respectively, thus abandoning their traditional community base to chase the almighty dollar (and Arbitron ratings), is the same thing that is happening to higher education.

The rise of higher education managerial professionals, who are focused on the bottom line rather than teaching or educating, pose a severe challenge to all institutional stakeholders, whether they are students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents or the community. Higher education is being transformed into an industry that feeds students and products into the market. . . .
